Religion and the March on Washington
Yesterday's post discussed the role of religion and American civic culture in Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. The program for the March on Washington drives home the point. It started with the national anthem, and included prayers and remarks by several religious figures: Archbishop Patrick O'Boyle, Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, Rabbi Uri Miller, Mathew Ahmann of the National Catholic Conference for Interracial Justice, Rabbi Joachim Prinz, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Dr. Benjamin Mays. Mahalia Jackson sang the gospel song, "How I Got Over; (also below).
